Child/Teen TherapyMy role is to create a safe and positive space for your child or teen to express their feelings and learn new ways to cope with their problems. We will figure out what is getting in their way of being happy and content. Through the use of talk therapy for teens and art therapy, if appropriate, we will work together to come up with better solutions in dealing with their stress and conflicts. For younger children we will add play therapy to help them work through their issues in a less threatening, and more comfortable, familiar manner. Trust is an important component in therapy for children and teens. They appreciate when they know I am working with them to create a more positive experience. Children (Ages 3 to 10)When I work with younger children, you, the parent, are actively involved in the treatment. Depending on the child's issue, you may be present in the sessions often. Other issues require the child to meet with me individually and I meet collaboratively with you on a regular basis without the child present. I often will need permission from you to speak with teachers, psychologists, and other professionals involved in order to get a better picture of what is happening in your child's life.
Pre-teens and Teens (Ages 11 to 18)When working with pre-teens and teens, I often meet with them first to help them feel more comfortable and trusting of the process. Teens need to feel they have some control and choice in the therapeutic relationship. Respect is key to making this work. I will then meet with you and the teen together to continue the assessment. If need be, I will work with you and the teen in family therapy or if appropriate, refer you to another therapist for parental support. Art Therapy & Play TherapyAs a part of the therapeutic process, I may use art or play therapy as an adjunct to talk therapy. Using art as a medium works well with people of all ages; especially children and teens. At times, it can help them express what is happening in their lives, sometimes without them even knowing this was buried inside of them. Teens tend to enjoy the artwork because it brings out their creative side and is another way to express themselves. Play Therapy is a tool that younger kids use to express their feelings and experience without words. The younger child is, the more they lack the ability to verbalize what is happening on the inside. Tactile and visual media tend to be a more comfortable way for them to communicate. |
